The Power Of Positivity
You’ve Got The Key, You’ve Got The Secret | Why Positive Vibes Can Save Lives
From the moment I started my ‘cancer journey’ (I put it in quote marks because it sounds a bit flouncy but I really don’t know how else to describe it) I have felt like if I remain positive then I will have a positive outcome. I was diagnosed in February 2018 and told I would have around 1-2 years left to live with treatment. Without treatment, 6 months! At 31 years old that is a pretty big slap in the face and I guess something that’s quite tough to remain positive about. But……. the doctors don’t know everything. They don’t know my body, they don’t know me (and how stubborn I am), they can’t give me solid answers because the truth is….. they just don’t know. Everyone responds differently to treatment, everyone’s bodies react differently to cancer. And while statistically, they believe I won’t survive this I am here to prove them wrong.
During the months Feb-September, I encountered several people with cancer who have sadly lost their battle. I noticed that they all seemed to be a lot iller than me. I think most of them had accepted their fate. The brain is such a powerful thing and I think because of this they probably (and quite understandably) accepted the statistics that the doctors had given them.
On the other hand, I have remained defiant and positive. I’m not saying I’ve had an easy ride by any stretch but I certainly haven’t felt like I’m on death’s door. I firmly believe that a positive mindset is the key to helping your body beat cancer. The brain tells your lungs to inhale/exhale, your heart to pump blood, to move your limbs….. it really is very powerful and most of what it’s telling your body to do to keep you alive is not conscious.
This follows the premise of a fascinating theory called NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming). Now I’m certainly no expert in this field but it works on the premise that if you believe something to be true then your subconscious will work to make it happen. So, if you believe and can visualise you beating cancer then your brain will subconsciously make it happen. I’m not suggesting forgoing standard treatment for positive mental attitude but I do believe it will support your treatment and help your body to work harder fighting.

So, if you or someone close to you is battling cancer. Please send them over to this blog, it’s going to be full of positive vibes. I’m hoping to create a happy space for people with cancer to help them on the bad days, to remain positive and believe that they will beat this disease.
